Your trusted civil celebrant partner

Personal, meaningful ceremonies. Every time. A seamless, respectful extension of your service.

When you refer a celebrant, you are trusting someone to care for your families in one of the most important moments of their lives, and to do so in a way that reflects your standards and your reputation.

I am Richard Smart, an independent civil celebrant, trusted by families to deliver funeral ceremonies that are calm, personal, and thoughtfully held. With a background in communications and over fifteen years’ experience in storytelling, I create services that are carefully written for each individual, never templated, never rushed, and always shaped around the life being remembered.

I have been working closely with funeral directors across the South West, receiving consistently warm feedback from families for my empathy, professionalism, and attention to detail.

Alongside established working relationships, adding a new celebrant to your roster can strengthen resilience, flexibility, and choice for families.

I would be very happy to become part of your celebrant team, offering a calm, carefully prepared service you can call on with confidence, and always in a way that reflects well on you and your business.

My approach to celebrancy

I became a celebrant because I believe funerals deserve the same care, intention, and professionalism as any other significant life moment.

After years working in communications and event delivery for national organisations and community teams, I saw first hand how powerful clarity, empathy, and the right words can be, especially when families are navigating loss.

Those skills now underpin everything I do as a celebrant, from the first conversation with a family to the delivery of the ceremony itself. I listen carefully, guide gently, and create services that feel authentic to the person being remembered, holding both structure and warmth in equal measure.

I trained with The Fellowship of Professional Celebrants, one of the UK’s leading celebrant organisations, where I was recognised early on for my professionalism, empathy, and natural approach to storytelling. That grounding, combined with real world experience, allows me to deliver ceremonies that are calm, well prepared, and thoughtfully held.

I work in a way that complements funeral directors, respecting timings, processes, and the practical realities of the day, while always keeping the family at the centre. I communicate clearly, prepare thoroughly, and arrive ready to support a service that feels steady, personal, and well cared for.

This work matters deeply to me. It is a responsibility I take seriously, and one I am proud to carry on behalf of the families and professionals who place their trust in me.

“Richard truly shone during his Funeral Celebrancy training - his natural ability to connect with people, and then craft and deliver ceremonies was remarkable. His eulogy presentation gave me goosebumps, and the congregation were completely captivated and moved. He has an exceptional amount to offer to both bereaved families and the funeral profession alike, and as his trainer, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him."
