About Richard Smart, Independent Celebrant
I’m Richard, an independent celebrant based in Dorset, and I believe ceremonies matter because people matter.

At life’s most significant moments, words can steady us, honour us, and bring people together. My role is to listen carefully, understand what matters most, and shape a ceremony that feels honest, thoughtful, and true to the people at its heart.
A personal approach to ceremony

Every ceremony I create begins with listening. I take time to understand the people involved, their relationships, their stories, and the tone they want to set.

Whether the moment calls for something reflective, celebratory, traditional with a twist, or quietly heartfelt, my aim is always the same, to create a ceremony that feels natural, meaningful, and genuinely personal.

How I came to celebrancy

I came to celebrancy through a background in communication, storytelling, and working closely with people at important moments in their lives. What drew me to this work was the opportunity to slow things down, to listen properly, and to create ceremonies that feel considered rather than rushed or generic.

Whether supporting a family after a death or working with a couple planning a wedding, the starting point is always the same, understanding who they are and what they want this moment to mean.

My approach to writing and delivery

Every ceremony I deliver is written from scratch. There are no templates, no scripts, and no assumptions about what a ceremony should sound like.

I ask thoughtful questions, gather the details that matter, and shape words that reflect the individual or couple at the centre of the day. On the day itself, I lead the ceremony with calm, clarity, and care, allowing space for emotion, reflection, and connection.

Professional standards and training

I am a member of the Fellowship of Professional Celebrants and work to high professional and ethical standards. This means ceremonies are prepared with care, delivered with professionalism, and always centred on the needs and wishes of the people involved.

Families and couples can feel confident that they are being supported by someone who takes this responsibility seriously and approaches each ceremony with respect and integrity.

Who I work with and where

I work with families and couples across Dorset and Cornwall, and regularly travel into Devon where needed. I support a wide range of ceremonies, from intimate gatherings to larger celebrations, always bringing the same level of care, attention, and presence.

Each ceremony is shaped around the people it is for, rather than the size, setting, or expectations placed upon it.

A gentle next step

If you’re considering a celebrant led ceremony and would like to talk things through, I’m always happy to have a simple, no-obligation conversation to see whether working together feels right.

Because your ceremony should sound like you.
And when it’s said smartly, it’s remembered always.
